Job Overview

Arguing about accountability

Accountability by the Numbers | JLC Online

Details

This project will extend the state-of-the-art within argumentation and dialogue theory to develop a formal theory of accountability. Such a theory will allow an AI system to reason about its accountability obligations when choosing how to act, and will allow system designers to guarantee that a complex system will behave appropriately. Transparency and explanation are a key part of accountability, and the project will therefore also investigate how the system can justify its decisions to others. The work falls into the area of Explainable Artificial Intelligence, and may also cover topics such as responsibility, trust and ethics within AI systems, and will build on and formalise ideas and theories from areas such as public administration, economics and psychology.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. The successful candidate should have, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics or a related discipline is essential. We would welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in logic.
