Data Privacy vs. Data Security [definitions and comparisons] – Data Privacy  Manager

Lead – Data Privacy is responsible for supporting the Data Privacy Officer in developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective data privacy program to ensure compliance with applicable data protection laws and regulations. The incumbent will work closely with the Data Privacy Officer and other stakeholders to identify, assess, and manage data privacy risks, provide guidance on data privacy matters, and promote a culture of privacy awareness within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Data Privacy Officer in developing, implementing, and maintaining data privacy policies, procedures, and guidelines in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) and provide recommendations to mitigate privacy risks associated with new projects, processes, or technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as IT, legal, HR, and compliance, to ensure that privacy requirements are incorporated into business processes and systems.
  • Provide guidance and support on data privacy matters, including data subject rights, data breaches, consent management, and vendor management.
  • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding data privacy inquiries, complaints, and incidents, and ensure timely and appropriate responses.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments to monitor compliance with data privacy policies and procedures, identify areas of improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop and deliver data privacy training and awareness programs to employees and contractors to promote a culture of privacy compliance.
  • Stay updated on changes in data privacy laws and regulations, and provide recommendations on adjustments to the data privacy program to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Support the Data Privacy Officer in responding to inquiries and investigations from regulatory authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of data privacy-related documentation, including data protection notices, consent forms, and records of processing activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, business, IT, or a related field. Advanced degree or relevant certifications in data privacy or information security is a plus.
  • Minimum of Five years of experience in data privacy, information security, or related roles, with a demonstrated understanding of data protection laws and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of privacy principles, best practices, and industry standards, such as GDPR, PDPA – Sri Lanka, ISO 27701 & ISO 27001.
  • Experience in conducting privacy impact assessments (PIAs), managing data breaches, and handling data subject rights requests.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate complex privacy concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate privacy risks.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with privacy management tools and technologies is a plus.
  • Professional certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT, or similar certifications are preferred.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data.
