Job Description:

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Physics and Astronomy Department at Iowa State University is pleased to invite applications to its Astronomy and Astrophysics Prize Fellowship. This is a new fellowship that aims to support early-career scientists in astronomy and astrophysics, to pursue independent research of their own choosing. The fellowship is for 3 years, starting on or around August 15, 2022. The fellow is expected to move to Ames at the start of their appointment, and actively participate to the scientific life of the department.

 

Current research at the Iowa State University Physics and Astronomy Department spans a wide variety of disciplines, from stellar astronomy (including asteroseismology, stellar populations, star formation and evolution), interstellar medium physics, high energy astrophysics, galaxy evolution, and planetary systems (including exoplanets and the Solar System). Our efforts are both observational across the entire electromagnetic spectrum (Iowa State is an AURA member institution), as well as theoretical (as part of a recent hiring efforts in our Department to create a theory cluster that includes high performance computational astrophysics). The new Fellow will be free to carry their own research program, although research interests that intersect with those of the Iowa State Astronomy and Astrophysics faculty are preferred. The fellow is expected to publish original research on Astronomy and Astrophysics high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and disseminate results in national and international conferences. The fellow is also encouraged to apply to competitive observing and/or computational time on large national and international facilities in support of their research.

 

The Iowa State Astronomy and Astrophysics Prize Fellow will receive an annual salary of $65,000 with a competitive benefits package, relocation reimbursement up to $2,500 and research funds of $10,000 annually to support their scientific program.

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics or related fields prior to appointment.

 

There is a flexible start date for this position between 6/15/2022 and 8/15/2022 based on discussion with the chosen candidate.
