The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and microbiology, including proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, metabolism, environmental microbiology and infectious diseases.

The focus of the research position will be the molecular and cellular mechanisms concerned with the study of the interface of RNA and the immune system. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in the domain of Immunology within the research laboratories of Associate Professor Cecile King and Professor Marcel Dinger in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.


About the role

  • $98K – $105K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed term – 3 years
  • Full time (35 hours)

Position Summary:

  • The focus of the research position will be the molecular and cellular mechanisms concerned with the study of the interface of RNA and the immune system. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in the domain of Immunology within the research laboratories of Associate Professor Cecile King and Professor Marcel Dinger in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.
  • It is expected that the Level A Academic will play a key role in leading the cellular and molecular biology projects in the laboratory. Specific performance expectations will be set individually with the Supervisor.

The role of Postdoctoral Research Associate reports to Associate Professor Cecile King. The role has no direct reports initially but may be responsible for supervision of higher degree research and/or Honours students.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Performing cellular and molecular analyses of immune cell populations and nucleic acid signalling pathways.
  • Contribute to writing manuscripts, grants and abstracts.
  • Participate in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Teach, assist and mentor scientists in the field of immunology/cell biology.
  • Assist Principle Investigator and researchers in the group in experimental design.
  • Train and co-supervise major honours and postgraduate research students, with the area of research expertise, as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the teaching program within the field of research expertise.
  • Participate in the department seminars and colloquia.
  • Any other tasks required by the Team Leader or delegated senior team members.
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory tasks, including flow cytometry, RNA purification, qPCR, Western blot, cell transfection.
  • Expertise in immunoprecipitation of target proteins, immunohistochemistry, gene knockdown and signalling pathways involved with nucleic acid sensing will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to design experiments independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent organisational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and publish research findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and at times with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to undertake any compliance and supervisor training as required.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
