Job Overview

Postdoctoral Researcher – Parks Lab

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Job Description

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our group to investigate questions related to acoustic communication, behavioral ecology and the potential effects of underwater noise from offshore wind energy development on marine mammals along the US East Coast, with a focus on baleen whales. The candidate will be expected to lead and implement research projects that increase accuracy for acoustic monitoring and density estimation of marine mammals, both by increasing our knowledge of basic acoustic behavior, and by developing new approaches for estimating population densities by exploiting individual-level differences in acoustic signals.

The candidate will be based in the Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse University (https://babel.syr.edu/) under the supervision of Professor Susan E. Parks and Dr. Frants H. Jensen, with fieldwork opportunities in a range of locations in the Atlantic Ocean. The initial appointment will be for a period of two years with the possibility of extension pending satisfactory performance and contingent on external funding.

If you have any questions about the position, please contact Prof. Susan E. Parks (sparks@syr.edu).

Application deadline for priority consideration 15th of December 2021. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.Qualifications

Completed a Ph.D. in Marine Biology, Marine Acoustics, Physical Oceanography, or a related field at the time of application, or a statement from current supervisor attesting expected graduation date before Jan 1st 2022.

Expertise with programming and data analysis using Matlab, Python or R.

Experience with acoustic analysis, especially aspects such as sound detection, classification and/or acoustic localization.

Well-developed scientific writing skills and track record of peer-reviewed publishing.

Good written and oral English language skills.Job Specific Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications above, candidates with the following desired qualifications are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Expertise on developing acoustic detection and localization algorithms within a Passive Acoustic Monitoring framework
  • Experience implementing and evaluating unsupervised and supervised classification algorithms
  • Experience with acoustic population monitoring or density estimation
  • Experience from oceanographic research cruises, including deploying and retrieving acoustic recorders at sea

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to work collaboratively with supervisors to implement project goals in a timely manner. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Analyze passive acoustic data from the Western North Atlantic to develop new methods for acoustic density estimation
  • Work with supervisors and other project collaborators to develop and test new hardware for acoustically localizing animals at sea
  • Coordinate and conduct field experiments at sea, including deploying and retrieving sound recorders and conducting focal follow observations
  • Analyze and write up results for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Contribute to report writing
  • In addition, the Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to be an active part of the Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse, and will have the opportunity to be involved in undergraduate and graduate student research mentoring.
