Job Overview

Postdoctoral Scholar – Department of Astronomy

Study Physics and Astronomy With Us | Macquarie University
The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seek applications for (2) postdoctoral associates in the area of computational astrophysics, in support of a collaboration developing state-of-the-art techniques to study supernovae and related phenomena.
This position is at full time (100%) for 1 year and is renewable for up to two further years based on performance and available funding. The expected start date is no later than August 1, 2021, which is flexible. Substantially earlier start dates would be welcomed. The positions will be open until filled.
The incumbent will be appointed as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UCB, with an expectation that their time be split between UCB and LANL, for which travel funds are available.
Scientists at Berkeley and Los Alamos are exploring opportunities to make revolutionary advances in computational science through co-design involving hardware tailoring and advanced computational methods. As part of this effort, the collaboration is targeting unique capabilities to address large-scale challenges in the study of supernovae.
The incumbent will be a core contributor to one or more efforts developing advanced methods for radiation hydrodynamics, non-LTE radiation transport, and/or large in-situ nuclear reaction networks. In addition, the incumbent would be expected to support software/hardware co-design activities by engaging with scientists at Berkeley and Los Alamos as an expert in computational methods.
Basic/Minimum qualifications (at time of application):
A PhD or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional qualifications (by start date):
A PhD or equivalent international degree is required by the start date.
Preferred qualifications:
A PhD degree or equivalent international degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
Expertise in one or more programming languages, including C++, C, and Fortran
Experience developing codes for advanced architectures.
Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals involving code or methods development.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualification. This position is in a represented bargaining unit.
