Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable full time Research Associate who will be based at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore.

For 50 per cent of the time, the successful candidate will assist the Principal Investigator, Prof Ho Kong Chong, and Co-Investigator Prof Brenda Yeoh, in a research project entitled “Belt and Road Initiative and Student Mobilities in China-Southeast Asia (BRISM)”. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of scholars to advance research and knowledge on China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its implications for tertiary education and student mobilities. 

For the other 50 per cent of the time, the successful candidate will assist Prof Brenda Yeoh with selected existing migration cluster projects in the institute (click on ARI for more information).   The successful candidate will be involved in desk research, writing and editing reports, publications and materials, assisting with organisation of workshops and webinars, as well as providing administrative support. 

Candidates should have at least a Masters or equivalent in the Social Sciences/Humanities. PhD candidates or those awaiting conferment of your PhD are also welcomed to apply. Your research interests should fall within a relevant area of the social sciences (e.g. migration and mobility studies in the East and Southeast Asia region).

Job Requirements

The candidate should possess the following:

  • Good project management, team-building skills and an aptitude for working in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Research experience in Asia, including fieldwork experience;
  • Strong library research skills and experience in using Qualitative Data Analysis software (NVivo);
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English, and the ability to write for a variety of audiences;
  • Language proficiency in Mandarin Chinese will be advantageous (for reading and reviewing Chinese documents);
  • Strong ability to perform editing work on manuscripts;
  • Organizational skills for workshops and webinars;
  • Willingness to play a co-ordinating role in liaising with international project members.
