S/he will: conduct experiments which may involve coordinating a complex experimental protocol; collaborate with the PI to design a research approach of a project and/or integrate results of the project; independently identify/modify standard procedures based on judgment concerning the general goals of a project; and develop, test, and evaluate new protocols and methods by remaining up to date on relevant new literature.

The candidate will support the preparation of various protocols, proposals, progress, and final reports as well as be likely co-author on reports for publication or professional presentation with the work being reviewed by the PI or faculty. The scientist should be an independent thinker and develop projects from a hypothesis, write their own manuscripts, and help the PI with grant writing.

S/he will present ongoing work and findings to colleagues in internal and external research settings and complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed. The scientist will submit abstracts to meetings and give a poster or oral presentations when invited.

The scientist should be a resource to help other members of the lab, e.g. technicians, postdoctoral fellows.

  • Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem-solving, and writing up for publication.
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.

  • The scientist should have at least 5-10 years of research experience in in vitro hematopoietic stem cell experiments (colony assays, liquid cultures, FACS, sorting), in vivo mouse experiments (transplantation experiments, FACs, bone marrow/spleen/liver tissue extraction, colony assays) leukemia proliferation assays, patient-derived mouse xenograft models with primary leukemia cells, drug studies in vitro and in vivo (calcusyn analysis, proliferation and apoptosis assays), bioinformatics, molecular techniques (qPCR, CRISPR/shRNA library screening, transformation, plasmid preparation), and protein assays (Western blot analysis, phosphoflow/FACS).
  • Expert level knowledge and skills in field of science related to research project.
  • Technical competence with in vitro bone marrow manipulation and stromal cell culture, flow cytometry cell sorting, RNA expression and sequencing.
  • Strong general computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs.
