Role Purpose

To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.

Main Opportunities And Challenges For This Role

  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of in-house teacher development programmes and support.
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience.
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Main Accountabilities But Not Limited To The Following

  • Plan, prepare and deliver 10 hours of high-quality English language teaching a week that meets the needs of different customer groups considering individual learning styles and complete teaching related duties to specified standards.
  • Provide effective line management (up to 8 contract teachers and additional freelance teachers depending on centre requirements) and support for staff including observations as per performance management guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all teaching is delivered to standards set out in teachers Role Profiles, the Global Statement of Approach and British Council Global Teaching Standards.
  • Lead and coordinate with other Senior Teachers on the design and implementation of an annual CPD programme which aligns with Regional Teaching Excellence Action Plan.
  • Oversee content and delivery of upper secondary and skills plus courses and ensure that they meet the needs and expectations of current/ future students and their parents by ensuring these courses have appropriate teaching materials, a detailed course outline, an appropriate set of learning aims and assessment tasks, and teachers have access to a range of supplementary teaching materials.
  • Ensure frameworks to support teaching and learning (Statements of Approach, IP, Teaching Standards Framework, Product guidelines, TEAP) are understood and implemented by academic colleagues in their day to day work.
  • Ensure other relevant colleagues (e.g. TOps, CS, TAs) are aware of frameworks to support teaching and learning.
  • Work with the Teaching Operations and Customer Services teams to deal with academic enquiries or complaints ensuring teachers are fully briefed and consulted where appropriate.
  • Lead on the design, development, implementation and evaluation of the English language courses and services for Upper Secondary and Skills Plus learners (ages 16 and above) in teaching and partner centres island wide
  • Lead on the Customer Engagement strategy for the centre islandwide in close consultation with other Senior Teachers across product groups/ branches and the Customer Engagement Coordinator.
  • Ensure clear direction and support for all Upper Secondary and Skills Plus teachers to deliver high quality lessons incorporating customer feedback and needs into course adaptation and overall product offer and through actively managing the training and development of teachers for these age groups.
  • Act as duty officer where appropriate to provide support for teachers, parents, students.
  • Assist in the recruitment, induction and onboarding of new teachers.

Essential

Role specific knowledge and experience:

  • 2 years post-diploma i.e. DELTA/Trinity Diploma TESOL experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of management and delivery of teacher training.
  • Experience of line managing/ coordinating teaching teams.
  • Experience in teaching:
    • Lower and Middle Secondary aged 11 to 15 (400+ hours).
    • Upper Secondary aged 16 to 17 (800+ hours).
    • Adults General English 18+ (1000+ hours).
