University Professor of Mathematics and Mathematical Methods of Data Science

pursuant to § 98 of the Austrian University Act (UG) 2002 is to be filled in as of October 1, 2022, in the form of an unlimited employment contract under public law in accordance with the Salaried Employees Act, on a full-time employment basis at the chair of Mathematics and Statistics.

Montanuniversität Leoben is an Engineering University with a special focus where scientists and students work on solutions for the world of tomorrow in the areas of “smart materials”, “advanced resources” and “sustainable processes” including their corresponding mathematical and scientific foundations – under the motto: where research becomes future!

We are seeking a candidate of international scientific reputation, who will promote the subject area of mathematics and mathematical methods of data science in research and teaching.

The preferred research specialization shall be from the fields of discrete mathematics in a broad sense including mathematical methods of data science, such as combinatorics with its stochastic and statistical aspects, algorithmic number theory, applied algebra including geometrical and topological methods, or the mathematical analysis of algorithms.

Montanuniversität Leoben is in the process of implementing a new architecture of the bachelor program as of the winter semester 2022/23. The new professor is expected to contribute to that reform process with a modern teaching concept. Undergraduate courses in mathematics and statistics including mathematical methods of data science are to be held both in German and English. A particular focus is on the first year of study which is common to all bachelor programs at the Montanuniversität. The teaching duties also include the supervision of scientific projects.

The requirements for employment are a university degree and a doctorate in a relevant field as well as a habilitation in the field of mathematics or an equivalent scientific qualification. Further prerequisites are a very good command of the German and English language, pedagogical and didactical skills including experience in the use of modern teaching methods and leadership qualities.

Experience in acquiring and conducting research projects on the national as well as international scale is of high importance.

Aside from a high personal motivation to achieve excellence in research and education we expect the ability and willingness to cooperate in research teams and to inspire peers as well as students. Enthusiasm to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment, scientific integrity and problem-solving competence are expected. Residency in the greater Leoben area is desired.

The classification and remuneration are based on the collective agreement of the universities in the application group A1. In this classification the gross monthly salary for full-time employment is € 5,321.70 (14 x per year). Provided appropriate qualification, a higher salary is subject to the appointment negotiations.
