Assistant Professor in Acting/Performance for Stage and Media

The Department of Theatre & Performance at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a 3-year Contractually Limited Appointment at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Acting/Performance for Stage & Media to commence 1 July 2023.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and to provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and studio practice. The programs taught will have an emphasis on acting and integrated training for live and digital performance (e.g. mediated performance for television and film, audio formats such as voice-over, and digital performance such as performance capture).

Candidate Qualifications:

An MFA in Theatre (or MFA equivalent with a substantial record of professional experience) in Acting, Directing, or Performance Creation (or a related field) is required.

Ongoing and dynamic professional theatre practice focused in one or more of the following areas: acting, acting for the camera, directing, performance creation (devised theatre), voice-over, performance capture; and significant experience teaching in two or more of these areas

Excellence or clear potential thereof in teaching university-level courses, as evident in: the letter of application; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning and community-based learning; teaching evaluations; and letters of reference.

Strong commitment to pedagogy and student success, the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to teaching, learning and program design, and evidence of good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching built on an awareness of, and experience with Equity, Diversity, Decolonization and Inclusion (EDDI).
Significant experience working with marginalized theatre artists and groups [e.g., Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour (IBPOC), persons with disabilities] and able to contribute to the diverse perspectives among our faculty and students is strongly preferred.

Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.

Clear record of, or potential for service contributions through administrative and committee work.
