The Cardiff Business School PhD programme will prepare you either for a career as a leading academic scholar or to excel as a business practitioner or policy decision maker. In line with our Public Value ethos, our PhD programme is designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to research current and important problems facing our economy and society. We host a vibrant and international community of more than 130 PhD students, who participate actively in every aspect of the School’s research, teaching and collegial activities. We support the training needs of doctoral students with in-house training, via our Doctoral Academy, and external training such as the EDEN seminars.

This scholarship opportunity is open to Home, EU and International students and there are a range of scholarship opportunities available including, full fees and stipend and fees only. Scholarships are offered on a competition basis.

There are two PhD Programmes offered at Cardiff Business School, the PhD in Economics and the PhD in Business and Management. Applicants are advised and encouraged to look at our academic profiles to find a suitable research supervisor and discuss your research interests before applying to the Programme.

PhD in Business Studies: Within our 3-year full-time PhD in Business Studies, students can choose to develop their project in the following research areas: Accounting and FinanceLogistics and Operations ManagementManagement, Employment and OrganisationMarketing and Strategy. Training on research philosophy, design and methods will be provided during the PhD project.

Depending on entry-level qualifications and prior research training, admission to the programme may be subject to the successful completion of the Cardiff University’s MSc in Social Science Research Methods (SSRM). Successful Scholarship holders may also have full fees and stipend paid for the MSc year.

PhD in Economics: The PhD in Economics is a 4-year full-time research programme hosted by the Economics section, which involves two years of advanced course work, and two years of research. The first year consists of an MSc Economics covering core subjects. In the second year, students complete the MRes Advanced Economics, while beginning to design their PhD research project. Years three and four comprise the PhD phase. It is also possible for suitably qualified students to join the PhD in Economics programme at the MRes stage, though they will be required to follow a slightly different programme to those students progressing directly from the MSc Economics (PhD Route).

Application Information: 

Students applying to the PhD in Business Studies should preferably have a specialist Master-level degree in Business, Management, Social Sciences or related subjects, from an internationally renowned University.

Students applying to the PhD in Economics should preferably have a Masters-level degree in Economics with an average of at least 65%.

The online application must include a research proposal demonstrating the intellectual ability to identify viable research questions and to develop a valuable contribution to knowledge in your elected area.

Funding Notes

Studentship Awards commence in October 2021, they cannot be deferred. A number of awards are available, including full tuition fees and stipend (currently £15,285 p.a) and fees only.
