Our research degrees offer the freedom to investigate a cutting-edge topic in depth, working with leading researchers and enjoying access to first-class facilities. Research is led by internationally renowned researchers running dynamic research programmes, with access to a range of state-of-the-art technology facilities. Our reputation is reflected in the tens of millions of pounds in research funding that we attract annually and by our consistent high level of publications in top international journals. We encourage high-level interdisciplinary collaborations, both nationally and internationally.

Alternatively, prospective students are encouraged to develop and submit a research proposal themselves for consideration. The best way to approach this is to contact member(s) of the academic faculty with similar research interests and explain that you are looking for PhD supervision in their area. From that informal conversation, a project could be discussed and outlined. The members of each of our research divisions and their research interests can be found here:

Alternatively, prospective students may submit an academic CV and research proposal / description to the BIOSI Education Office (), which will be circulated to academic staff in the relevant faculty. Candidates must specify the research division (listed above) that they wish they CV and proposal to be circulated to.
