The Department of Mathematics conducts research, postgraduate education and undergraduate education in a wide range of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is approximately 120, of which 30 are doctoral students. The department has three research programmes: analysis and probability theory, algebra and geometry, applied mathematics and statistics. The department is now looking for a PhD student in mathematics, supported by WASP (Wallenberg AI Autonomous Systems and Software Program), to research the project “Scalable inference in Statistical Relational AI: a model theor approachetic on a domain of markets and media”. Duties:A doctoral student shall primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own doctoral education, which covers four years. The work may also include other departmental duties to a limited extent (maximum 20 %) mainly teaching in basic mathematics courses. In this case, the employment covers a maximum of five years.

Qualification requirements: For doctoral student employment, the holder must be admitted or will be admitted to doctoral education, where the degree of ability to benefit from doctoral education is crucial. The applicant candidate should have a master’s degree or equivalent that includes a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, philosophy or any other relevant field, or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree by 31 December 2021. An ideal candidate has a strong background in mathematical logic and interest in interdisciplinary research and programming. The candidate must have good oral and written skills in English.

Application procedure:The application must contain a letter in which the applicant briefly and succinctly describes himself and his research interests, past experiences and future visions. The application must also include a CV, copies of diplomas and grades, degree projects (or work copy thereof) and contact details of a maximum of three reference persons. However, we do not wish for letters of recommendation.
