About the position

A PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU. The PhD research is in sustainable waste valorisation and hydrogen use in an EU project (Harare) in Horizon 2020.

Duties of the position

We are seeking candidates with strong interest in metallurgical processes holding Master degree in materials science and engineering. The PhD researcher will work on the evolution of phases through the agglomeration of Fe and Al containing materials, and their behaviour in direct reduction. The area of research is in circular economy with focus on waste valorisation. Thermodynamic knowledge about reactive high temperature systems such as gas-solid reactions is important. Good knowledge about thermodynamic fundamentals and analytical modelling are important, in addition to experience of using thermodynamic software such as FactSage and HSC Chemistry. The applicant must do significant experimental research in lab and therefore it is advantageous that the applicant has good lab experiences to do kinetic studies and modelling. The project will require the use of different metallurgical equipment such as different reduction furnaces and thermogravimetry, and advanced materials characterization techniques such as SEM, ICP-MS, XRF, XRD, etc, and therefore experiences in materials characterization is advantageous. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently, possesses good communication skills, and integrates well into a team.

Required selection criteria

A PhD research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian Master degree in materials science, materials chemistry or corresponding foreign master degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian master degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • The candidate must have, or complete before the October 2021, a Master degree in the field of materials science and engineering.
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills as well as presentation skills are required.
  • Previous experience with raw materials, working with a variety of equipment in metallurgical lab.
