Postdoctoral Fellow – Membrane Protein Structural Biology

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The School of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal Chemistry invites you to apply for our postdoctoral fellow position! The incumbent will be responsible for producing high-quality membrane protein samples to enable structural and functional characterization. The successful candidate will work closely with a highly collaborative group of scientists whose expertise includes organic synthesis, protein production and characterization, mammalian cell culture technology, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).

Required Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
• Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, or other equivalent fields with substantial experience in protein biochemistry, yeast or mammalian cell culture technology, X-ray Crystallography, or single-particle cryo-EM
• Hands-on experience optimizing the production of challenging proteins for structural studies.
• Experience characterizing proteins using analytical biochemical and biophysical methods is preferred.
• Proficient in structure determination using X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• A drive to succeed in challenging research projects that aim to explore the structural basis of membrane protein activity is essential

Preferred Qualifications:

• A proven track record in optimizing the expression and purification of challenging proteins
• Proficiency in X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM methods is strongly preferred
