Project Title:

Teaching Mathematics Through Problem Solving Developing a Pedagogical Approach for Low-Progress Students in Singapore [OER 21/22 CBH]

 

Project Introduction:

The primary aim of this research is to improve mathematics classroom practices by building the capacities of our teachers and by enhancing the learning experiences and learning outcomes of our students, particularly for our lower progress students in mathematics. In particular, the project team aims to design, trial, and develop a novel pedagogical model for teaching towards mathematical competency, focusing on the idea of teaching through problem solving (TTPS) for lower progress students.

 

Requirements

Essential

Candidates should possess:

  • a good degree with an emphasis in the one of the following: mathematics and/or education, or a post-graduate diploma or equivalent in education;
  • basic research skills (conduct literature review and basic data analysis skills);
  • good computer skills (e.g. MS Office programs);
  • skills to work and communicate with people of different age and ethnic group, including school principals, teachers and students; and
  • good work ethics. He/she should be able to work flexibly, as part of a team, as well as independently with minimum supervision.

Preferred

Candidates with:

  • a good understanding of the Singapore Education System;
  • prior relevant experience in educational research or other research-related fields;
  • IT skills for research purposes (e.g. video-editing software, data analysis software, audio recording and video recording equipment); and
  • a positive attitude towards learning new data analysis skills.

 

Responsibilities

The job scope of this Full-Time Research Assistant will include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Engage in data collection (e.g. filming, interviewing) and data analysis
  • Manage research data and project storage and documentations
  • Prepare research reports including literature reviews
  • Assist in developing research instruments
  • Liaise with research participants and other stake holders
  • Manage research project (e.g. liaise with schools and participants, prepare schedules, monitor participation rate, arrange meetings, organize seminars, attend to refreshments during seminars, etc.)
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator
