A Research Fellow position is currently available in the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute to achieve the rapid on-site detection of environmental pollutants in waste materials and high value-added products (e.g. biochars and active carbons). The suitable candidate will become a part of a vibrant team addressing Singapore’s challenges in waste and resource management, and contribute to promote Singapore as a zero-waste circular economy smart city hub.

Job Responsibilities

  • Undertake full research work and administrative duties during the term of employment with the following domains: Sampling and comprehensive characterization of biomass waste materials, waste streams and value-added products; Participation in the design and fabrication of a novel portable gas sensing array device for comprehensive monitoring of toxic and odor-causing gases; Implementation of the novel gas sensing array device, portable GC/MS, heavy metal sensors and optical particle counter to identify and/or quantify air pollutants, mainly including toxic and odor-causing gases, VOCs, heavy metals, and particulate matters; On-site comprehensive monitoring of the critical air pollutants in emissions for the deployment of system in both urban and rural areas

  • Assist the PL and Co-PI in experimental designs, conducting experiments, and troubleshooting

  • Prepare research proposals, publications, and technology disclosures

  • Supervise students and junior research staff

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential to succeed

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a relevant field

  • Proven analytical chemistry background with specific interest in field work and/or environmental sensing

  • Hands-on experience with gas sensors, GC-FID/TCD, TD-GC/MS, and optical particle counter is required

  • Extensive knowledge in syngas and flue gas analysis is desired

  • Ability to operate and analyze results of portable GC/MS, ICP-OES/MS, HPLC, IC and PID is advantageous

  • Good record of peer-reviewed papers is preferred

  • Scientific articles, proposals and reports writing skills are required

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Good English writing and communication skills

  • Excellent teamwork awareness

  • Productive, hard-working and dedicate to the completion of any task assigned
