The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) invites applications for the position of Research Scientist.

 

The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education (Singapore), Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore. Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities and microbiomes.

 

The position of bioinformatic research scientist is integral to the elucidation of the sequencing results of key environmental sampling experiments conducted by the SCELSE Meta’omics and Microbiomes cluster. With the increasing amount of both genomic and environmental sensor data, the role of bioinformaticists plays a fundamental role in helping to establish robust analysis for which reliable scientific results and conclusions can be made. As NTU rises as a leading research university, a successful candidate position can only help but support the mission of research excellence through quality and innovative research contributions.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Establish and run metagenomic analysis pipelines
  • Investigation and trial of new bioinformatic methods for potential integration into standard protocol(s)
  • Assembly and annotation of whole genome bacterial and fungal isolates
  • Proper archival of sequencing read data (SRA) and whole genome assemblies (WGS) into public databases as necessary for publication
  • Clear and careful documentation of all analysis and creation of standard operating protocols (SOP)

Job Requirements:

  • Masters in biological sciences or relevant field preferably with more than 3 years’ relevant experience
  • Experience with Unix, with knowledge of Python and R
  • Knowledge and experience of bioinformatics analysis methods and tools
  • Experience analyzing large datasets
  • Experience working on an HPC
  • Experience with relational databases and application development, a plus
  • Familiar with both long-read and short-read sequencing platforms a plus
