PhD Position in Data Science; Molecular Information of Highly Complex Natural Mixtures in the Ocean

How to become a Research Fellow - Salary, Qualifications, skills & Reviews – SEEK

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at University of Oldenburg invites applications for a

PhD student position (m/f/d)

Data science: molecular information of highly complex natural mixtures in the ocean

salary according to E13 TV-L, 75%
starting immediately until 31.12.2024

(an extension to a full 3-year term is intended)

Application deadline: 1. February 2022

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The position is part of a collaborative project funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture in the framework of the program “Digitalization in the Natural Sciences”. The project is entitled “Global Carbon Cycling and Complex Molecular Patterns in Aquatic Systems: Integrated Analyses Powered by Semantic Data Management”. In this project marine geochemists and mathematical modelers at ICBM work together with data scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (Göttingen).

Your tasks:

Complex molecular data on marine dissolved organic matter, obtained by high-field, multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) must be ordered, structured and interrelated with each other in the context of other molecular and environmental information via high-dimensional, nonlinear data analyses. The results will be combined with complementary analyses performed by project partners at MPI in Göttingen and, moreover, will serve as input to and validation for network models of interactions between highly diverse microbial communities and organic molecules.

Requirements:

Qualifying academic university degree (Master or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) in Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related disciplines, with good grades. A strong background in multivariate data analyses, physics, theoretical geochemistry or related areas is desirable. Applicants experienced in the field of ecological or geochemical data analyses and complex systems are particularly encouraged to apply. High proficiency in a widely used programming language, e.g. R, Matlab, Python, is expected.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony regulations (§ 21 Section 3 NHG) female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, qualifying documents (final academic records), a research statement (maximum 1 page) and the names and contact information of up to two references should be submitted by email in a single PDFto Dr. Jan Freund ( jan.freund@uol.de ) using subject “Digitalization-Modelling” by 01.02.2022. Interested candidates are encouraged to contactDr. Jan Freund ( jan.freund@uol.de ) for more information about the position.
