It was one of the greatest opportunities to work in the field of Image Recognition, under the supervision of Dr. Owen Noel Newton Fernando, where I gained an abundance ofcherishable experiences. My internship is undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my undergraduate career. A research internship would bethe opportunity to get ahead of the curve by collecting research experience during your internship. As a research engineer, you will learn to read research papers, write literature reviews, work with scholarly supervisors to focus on your research conducting surveys while working with fellow researchers in a well-equipped research laboratory. Eventually, these experiences will largely benefit you in your final year, where you conduct your final year research project. And if you are thinking of applying for a Ph.D or Masters after your undergraduate studies, your experiences will be a valuable addition to your CV.

Expanding your horizons

As you move forward from being a high school student to a university graduate, you expand your social circle. In the process, you gain a heap of new ideas and new perspectives which benefit your life in multiple ways. Now imagine the treasure trove of new experiences and opportunities that awaits you when you onboard to a new country!

Here are three ways how you will expand your horizons by choosing to complete your internship in Singapore.First of all, meet new people and expand your network. During my time in Singapore, I got the chance to meet students, professors, and a load of new interesting people with different ideas and passions. By interning at a university, I also got to participate in clubs and societies, engage in doing my favorite sports, and mingle with both foreign and local students. Your fellow students will be very warm and welcoming. Universities like Nanyang Technological University also play host to a lot of foreign interns. Therefore, you get to meet people from all over the world. Hopefully, you might even have the chance to meet your ideal business partner and start a business together.

Secondly, about the Singaporean culture. As we grow up, we are exposed to the culture in our country which in turn shapes our way of thinking and our way of working. However, the world is a large place and there are more ways of working and living than the one you are used to. What better ways would there be to experience a new lifestyle other than to experience it all firsthand by going for an internship? You will get to see how people go about their daily lives. By incorporating the best of what you observe, you can lead a more happy and productive life.

Last but not least, the independence. As a university student, you are getting ready to go into the real world. But, if you want to taste what it is to be truly independent there is no other better option than a foreign internship. Working and living in another country forces you to master the necessary life skills quickly. From learning to do your own laundry topaying your own utility bills, living for 6 months in a foreign country would be the optimal way to learn and experience what it is to be truly independent.

Why Singapore?

After reading the above points, you might be convinced that a foreign internship is an ideal way to go. But why choose Singapore as the country to visit for your internship? Why not choose other countries from the rest of the world?

One of the main reasons would be because Singapore is home to a plethora of world-class universities. These universities play host to a variety of well-funded laboratories which conduct cutting-edge research in every field from Artificial Intelligence to NanoTechnology. Therefore, you can find a research position in your preferred field in a well-regarded laboratory with comparative ease.

Furthermore, Singapore’s thriving economy has spawned a vibrant industry sector that is immensely integrated with its world-class universities. During my time at Nanyang Technological University, I had the chance to present my research to the gathered industry professionals and discuss the application of my research in real-world problems. It is a guaranteed fact that not all countries have such opportunities to move quickly between conducting cutting-edge research and applying your research industry use cases. Finally, Singapore is a melting pot of every conceivable culture in the world. No matter where you are from, no matter what language you speak, you are bound to feel at home in Singapore.
